For what happens next

The story ended.Yours doesn’t have to.

Pick up a public-domain classic where its author stopped, carry on a story whose licence invites it, or write the sequel to your own finished book. Authrot learns the world first, so what comes next fits.

Bring it in

Start from the book that came before.

Import your own finished book, or a public-domain or openly licensed text, from Word, Google Docs, Markdown or PDF. It’s sorted into chapters in minutes.

Learn the world

Know the world before you add to it.

Scan the chapters into the story bible: every character, place and object, with every place they appear. Anchor the facts that must still hold.

Loose ends

Find the threads left hanging.

Setups that never paid off are listed with the line that made them. That’s where the next book starts.

The next arc

Plan what happens next.

Set each arc’s goal, what stands in the way and what it costs, then plan the chapters. Each one is scanned against the plan as you write it.

Good to know

Which stories can you continue?

The public domain. Works whose copyright has ended, like Pride and Prejudice, Dracula or The Count of Monte Cristo. When a work enters the public domain depends on the country, so check where you live, and start from the original text: a modern translation or edition can have a copyright of its own.

Openly licensed stories. A Creative Commons licence that allows adaptations, so not one marked ND (“no derivatives”). Follow its terms, such as crediting the author.

Your own book. Finished, abandoned or half-way, it’s yours to continue.

A book still under someone else’s copyright shouldn’t be imported; our terms say the same. This is a guide, not legal advice.
